Primer on the Venture Capital Perspective: The Hot Metal Book Club Discusses Secrets of Sand Hill Road
From advice to practical takeaways, on July 21, 2026, the Hot Metal Book Club discussed Secrets of Sand Hill Road: Venture Capital and How to Get It by Scott Kupor.
Based on Kupor’s first-hand experience working at Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm located on Sand Hill Road in Silicon Valley, this book highlights how funding from venture capital funds works, who it is right for, and how venture capital firms decide to invest in startups.
Kupor’s background as a lawyer, then an entrepreneur, and then as a venture capitalist provides unique insight for readers into the different perspectives to consider when building relationships with venture capitalists, understanding venture capital portfolios, and sharing your startup’s story with venture capitalists.
Christian Manders, who facilitated the group’s discussion, said, “Even if you are not ready for institutional money, this book is an incredible primer of what investors look for in a company.”
Also leading the discussion were Liam Krut, who is an Investment Partner with Reinforced Ventures, David Smith, a Senior Attorney with DLA Piper LLP US, and Jen Luke, the Innovation Ecosystem Relationship Manager at Hot Metal Campus.
The discussion, which was the fourth Hot Metal book club of 2026, met during the weekly BioBreakfast, a gathering of Pittsburgh’s life science sector founded by Christian Manders, CEO of Undaunted Bio and COO of Promethean LifeSciences, Inc., held at the Riveria Building at 350 Technology Drive.
The first Hot Metal Book Club of 2026 discussed The Billion-Dollar Molecule by Barry Werth, the second Hot Metal Book Club of 2026 discussed Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey A Moore, and the third Hot Metal Book Club of 2026 discussed The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen.
What Are Venture Capital Funds?
To provide a foundation for the book club conversation, the group first discussed the fundamentals of venture capital funds.
Venture capital funds invest in early-stage, high-risk companies that are not yet ready for traditional financing. An important note is that most startups should not raise venture capital money, as venture funding is appropriate only for companies with potential for significant growth and scalability.
“The common thread is risk since this is an unproven market,” said Liam Krut, Investment Partner with Reinforced Ventures, a Pittsburgh-based venture capital firm.
Venture capital investors are typically looking for strong technology or differentiated innovation, a large market opportunity, or a credible team capable of execution.
On the venture capital funds side of things, a small number of successful companies generate most returns for them.
When venture capital firms evaluate if a startup is investable, they are looking for technology/product uniqueness, market size and urgency of the problem, and team and execution capability.
The group discussed how venture capital firms are looking for companies that solve a meaningful problem, not just exploring interesting scientific challenges. Communicating the problem and the solution that your startup provides is key, which brings up the importance of storytelling.
Telling Your Startup’s Story
Why the work matters. What problem it solves. Why someone should care. These are the building blocks for founders to use to tell the story of their startup to investors, customers, employees, and partners.
It is important to acknowledge that scientists and venture capitalists may have different communication needs and preferences. While great science is the essential element of a scientific startup, for someone looking to invest, they first want to hear about the outcomes and impact in your startup’s story.
“When you’re at the bench, you’re very focused on your science. I know how to communicate my scientific work to another scientist, but when speaking with investors you can’t just share about the technical methods and laboratory research results, you have to be able to talk across the table to somebody that’s not in your subject field and tell them about why you’re doing the work,” said Jen Luke, PhD, Innovation Ecosystem Relationship Manager at Hot Metal Campus, who’s scientific research included topics such as surface chemistry, material science, and biomaterials.
The group discussed how scientists can practice effective communication that translates their scientific work into describing the clinical impact, commercial value, and market need rather than focusing on the technical details of the research methods and findings.
And when the message isn’t getting through, the book club highlighted that founders should be receptive to feedback rather than assuming that others automatically understand the value proposition they are trying to communicate.
“Always be open to the criticism,” said David Smith, Senior Attorney with DLA Piper LLP US.
Building Founder-Investor Relationships
Given the difference in previous experiences and perspectives of scientists pursuing startups and those working in venture capital firms, building relationships with investors is essential. Over time, this will provide more insight into the priorities, incentives, and needs of those working in venture capital firms.
The group discussed how fundraising is relationship-driven. A few key points that the book club discussed were that warm introductions are far more effective than cold outreach and that lawyers, established entrepreneurs, and professional organizations in your network can facilitate introductions. These warm introductions help investors to get to know founders before they are actively fundraising.
Building trust takes time. But with patience, this trust improves fundraising outcomes.
How Startups Can Be Prepared for the Momentum of Venture Capital Funding
With sound science, clear storytelling, and relationships as a foundation, startups seeking to raise capital should complete all legal, financial, and organizational preparation before starting a fundraising process.
The book club discussed the importance of being prepared from a legal and governance perspective, as investors may move faster than startups expect, often requiring immediate action.
A few specific items that Manders highlights he reaches for his copy of Sand Hill Road as a reference book are related to term sheets and deal structures. The group mentioned that while entrepreneurs may negotiate only a few financings over the course of their careers, investors are negotiating constantly, which makes having experienced legal counsel essential.
“You don’t get many chances at speaking with venture capital funds for investment, you have to be ready to make your pitch,” said Manders, CEO of Undaunted Bio.
For biotech-specific startups, the book club acknowledged that patient capital is required as development timelines can extend beyond 10 years, highlighting that specialized biotech investors tend to better understand these longer timelines and regulatory risks that are involved.
From connecting scientific advances to commercial and patient outcomes, understanding term sheets, and investor point of view, the July Hot Metal Book club provided an exploratory conversation on the topic of venture capital funding for startups.
